SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A state appeals court has disbarred former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver as a lawyer because he was found guilty of seven public corruption-related felonies by a jury last year.
Silver, a lawyer since 1969, should be stricken from the state's rolls of licensed attorneys, effective Nov. 30, 2015, ruled a panel of five judges in the Appelate Division of the First Judicial District.
Silver, one of the state's most powerful politicians for decades, was convicted on that date by a federal jury in Manhattan of two counts of honest services mail fraud, two counts of honest services wire fraud, two counts of extortion under color of official right, and one count of monetary transactions involving crime proceeds.
